The Anzar High girls’ volleyball team took another step in its development Thursday night at Carmel, but the Hawks couldn’t overcome the undefeated Padres on the road and fell in three games (25-18, 26-24, 25-16).

The Hawks are now 1-3 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 6-9 overall.

Alex Flores led the Hawks with five kills, while Jessica Frusetta had three kills and Camille Merz and Nicole Seymour added two kills apiece. Carly Johnson and Sydnee Masuen had 13 and five assists, respectively, with Johnson adding four kills to her stat line.

“Good attitude, good energy and good chemistry,” Anzar head coach Jennifer Daughenbaugh said. “I think the meshing of the team is coming along.

“I think they all played well, but I think there were some gaps.”

Daughenbaugh said the team’s hitting needs improvement, while its serving, although better against Carmel than it was against King City on Tuesday, could still be better.

One highlight from Thursday’s match was the play of Nicole Seymour, who missed the first game due to a dental appointment, Daughenbaugh said. The junior middle blocker was able to get into Game 2, though, where she served for the first time this season and played a rotation in the back row.

“She served well and her defense was excellent,” Daughenbaugh said.

Anzar will visit Santa Catalina next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
