Benito High wrestling team kicked off its 2010-11 campaign on the
right foot last Saturday when it went 5-0 at the General McLane
Duals in Fresno, defeating Roosevelt (49-27), McLane (66-18),
Hoover (57-15), Fresno (54-21) and Madera South (45-37) in the
tournament championship.

Behind a 5-0 performance from Jay Garcia at 130 pounds, the San Benito High wrestling team kicked off its 2010-11 campaign on the right foot last Saturday when it went 5-0 at the General McLane Duals in Fresno, defeating Roosevelt (49-27), McLane (66-18), Hoover (57-15), Fresno (54-21) and Madera South (45-37) in the tournament championship.

Garcia’s undefeated record was the lone spotless streak for San Benito, although Miguel Martin del Campo, who split time with Nick Angelo (1-2) at 215 pounds, went 2-0.

Jonathan Arballo (2-1) and Zack Rodriguez (1-1) also split time at 152 pounds.

Otherwise, San Benito had seven different wrestlers finish with 4-1 marks, including Robb Rodriguez at 119 pounds, Kenny Salcedo at 125 pounds, Greg Landry at 145 pounds, Nick Mendizabal at 160 pounds, Joey Garcia at 171 pounds, Jorge Perez at 189 pounds and Javier Bustillos in the heavyweight class.

At 103 pounds, Jennifer Espinosa finished the dual tournament with a 3-2 record, while Dominic Cortes posted a similar mark at 142 pounds.

San Benito will return to the mat on Friday when it will take on Atascadero at 4:30 p.m., while at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, the Balers will host the annual Fehlman/Baxter Tournament.

JV Note:

The San Benito High junior varsity wrestling team also posted an undefeated mark when it went 5-0 at the JV Duals last Friday at Morgan Hill’s Sobrato High.

The Balers took first place out of 10 teams at the meet, and had three wrestlers post perfect records in the process.

Anthony Gatto at 112 pounds, Eddie Perez at 145 pounds and Tim Castillo at 170 pounds all went undefeated for San Benito.

The Balers will compete next on Friday, when they will host Atascadero in Hollister.
