Anzar’s Aaron Hsia-Coron took the top individual spot in a dual meet with York on Tuesday in Monterey, but the host Falcons managed to defeat the Hawks by a tight 25-33 margin, nonetheless.
“We did OK, but we didn’t win,” Anzar head coach Doug MacKinnon said. “I was pleased with the performance today.”
Hsia-Coron unofficially clocked a 16:08 at the Laguna Seca course, a strong improvement over the 17:00 he ran last Thursday at the Mission Trail Athletic League Center Meet at Salinas’ Toro Park.
The junior harrier even defeated York’s top runner James Palaniuk, who was about 15 seconds behind Hsia-Coron, MacKinnon said.
At the Center Meet last Thursday, though, Palaniuk topped Hsia-Coron by 14 seconds.
“With the wind whipping,” MacKinnon said, the Hawks were able to take third place when Jacob Wilkenson recorded an unofficial time of 17:08. York’s Will Shearer took fourth approximately 15 seconds behind Wilkenson, though, while Anzar’s Izzy Parra came in about 15 seconds behind Shearer in fifth place.
“They were duking it out with them pretty nicely,” MacKinnon said.
However, York was able to finish in sixth, seventh and eighth place to edge the visiting Hawks by just eight points.
“I’m interested to see how the season will progress,” MacKinnon added, “see if we can close the gap or not.”
On the girls side, Anzar’s Valerie Quezada finished first with an unofficial time of 20:45.
The Hawks are off the rest of the week and won’t return until Saturday, Oct. 10, when they will travel to Crystal Springs in Belmont for the Serra Invitational. Race time is 10 a.m.
