The future looks bright for the Anzar High track and field program.
Eighteen of the Hawks’ 22 track and field performers will be at Tuesday’s Mission Trail Athletic League frosh-soph meet at Greenfield.
“We should be at or near the top on Tuesday,” said Anzar head coach Michael Gunderson. “We have some kids who will have some good marks within a couple of years.”
The Hawks will be at Friday’s MTAL Championships at Hartnell College. The best hopes to move on to the Central Coast Section trials are two seniors – Remigio Mireles and Chas Armour. Mireles, who has been battling injuries, has personal recordss in the 400 and 800 of 54 seconds flat and 2:09, respectively.
“Sergio has been showing good leadership for us this year,” said Gunderson.
Armour has high-jumped 5-8 and hurled the discus 128 feet.
“Chas could surprise in the discus on Friday,” said Gunderson. “That’s an area where he is emerging right now and move on to CCS.”
