After compiling an 11-1 record and earning their second straight Coastal Athletic League title, the Anzar High girls basketball team was rewarded with four all-league selections recently, more than any other team in the CAL.
Alyssa Rodriguez, Nicole Mello, Kelsey Robledo and Liliana Resendez earned all-league status after leading the Hawks (13-11 overall) to the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs for the second year in a row.
“It’s nice to have four (selections) out of the 10,” Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel said.
The CAL, which is considered a division of the Mission Trail Athletic League, does not recognize first team and second team selections, Netzel said.
Nevertheless, the four selections for the Hawks was the most in the CAL, with Pacific Collegiate earning three selections.
Rodriguez, a sophomore, was the CAL’s leading scorer with 12.43 points per game. She also led the league in steals with 93, or 4.42 per game.
Resendez, a senior, was the league’s leading 3-point shooter (.86 per game), while the junior Mello was Anzar’s second leading scorer with 8.75 points per game. First-year freshman Kelsey Robledo was third with 8.36 points per game.
Anchorpoint Christian’s Chelsea Urbanski was named the league’s MVP.
The Hawks, which qualified for the CCS tournament for just the second time in school history, lost to Castilleja in the opening round of the Division V playoffs 54-18.
