The Women’s Club of Hollister will hold its annual student art contest at its Feb. 8 meeting. Students in kindergarten through high school may enter art work. Photography may be submitted from middle school through high school students. Photos should be matted with no glass frames. The deadline to have artwork picked up for the contest is Feb. 6.
The winners from the local club will go on to the Loma Prieta District contest to be held in March, with first place winners from that round going to the state contest in May.

Sacred Heart open house
Sacred Heart School will host an open house Jan. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. for families interested in learning more about the school. The event will be held at the school’s O’Reilly Hall, 670 College St. It will include a full preview of school’s curriculum, sports activities, music and choir will be available for pre-school and K thru 8. The school is accepting applications for fall 2012 enrollment.
Heroes noms
The American Red Cross Monterey Bay Area Chapter is seeking nominations for the 2012 Heroes Celebration, to be held May 19 at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey. The goal of the event is to recognize acts of heroism performed by local residents and pay tribute to those who have performed lifesaving deeds.
All nominees must work or reside in Monterey or San Benito County, though the heroic acts may have occurred elsewhere. Nominees for the Hero Award must have performed an act or acts of courage to save or attempt to save someone’s life. The events should have occurred between Jan. 1, 2011 and Dec. 31 2011.
Categories include Animal Rescue Hero, Fire Safety, Good Samaritan – Adult, Good Samaritan – Youth, Law Enforcement Hero, Medical Professional Hero and Military Hero. The deadline to submit nomination is Feb. 28. Details: 626-5251, or email

Climbing at Pinnacles
The Pinnacles National Monument reinstated its annual climbing advisory to protect nesting raptors on Jan. 17. Last year, eight pairs of prairie falcons produced 33 fledglings. The Monument has also been a successful nesting site for Peregrine falcons, American kestrels, golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, red-shouldered hawks, Cooper’s hawks, sharp-shinned hawks and white-tailed kites. Park researchers will continue to monitor raptors to better understand the birds. “We ask you to refrain from any off-trail hiking and climbing in sensitive areas, which include High Peaks, the Balconies Cliffs area, Machete Ridge, Citadel, Goat Rock, Resurrection Wall, Little Pinnacles, Pipsqueak Pinnacles, Egg Rock/Teapot Dome, and the Scout Peak area,” said Karen Beppler-Dorn, the Park superintendent. “Without your cooperation in avoiding the advisory areas, this program could not be the success that it is.”

Mission 10K
Registration is being accepted for the 29th annual Mission 10 run through the streets of San Juan Bautista on Jan. 28. Ten-mile and 5K races will be held, along with the Elliott Swank Memorial 1-Mile Kid’s Fun Run. The event is a benefit for community service projects sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hollister. Entry fees are $5 for the fun run (with three or more children from the same fee charged $12 total). All other runners will pay $25 before Jan. 26 and $30 thereafter.
