Bruce John Sweeney

Bruce John Sweeney,75, crossed over at St. Louise Regional Hospital on Wednesday April 6th 2011, due to complications from a stroke.

Bruce was born in Oak Park Ill, and moved to California at the age of three with his parents. They settled in the Oakland/ San Leandro Area, eventually purchasing a home in Sheffield Village. Bruce graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Alameda where he served as senior class president. He then attended UC Berkley where he received a B.A. in History in 1958. He had fond memories of singing in the Cal Glee Club and participating in a concert tour of Japan.

Bruce retired from the US Postal Service in 2007 after serving as a letter carrier and clerk. He worked at the Gilroy post office beginning in 1982. He worked as a letter carrier at the Cupertino Post Office from 1968 to 1982.

He enjoyed participating in parish activities both at St Mary’s parish in Gilroy and St. Catherine’s parish in Morgan Hill. He loved to study and research world and religious history. He loved baseball, movies, travel, time spent with family, and steak and ice cream.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Valerie, and his daughters, Elizabeth and Danielle.

A mass of the resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday April 14th, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary of the Assumption parish in Gilroy with internment following at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.
