Baer, who resides in Hollister but trains at the Champions Academy in Morgan Hill, earned the gold medal in the floor routine with a score of 15.25, defeating runner-up Joe Dixon (15.15) by a tenth of a point, and earned the bronze in the high bar with a score of 14.40, falling short of Angel Leon’s first-place score of 15.20.
Competing in the Level 7 10-11 Division, Leon was also first in the All-Around with an overall score of 89.40. Baer’s sixth-place finish included a total of 86.75 points in the competition, which brought together qualifying athletes from Northern California, Southern California, Hawaii, Nevada and Arizona.
Baer had previously qualified to the Northern California team, which includes just six gymnasts, while his finish in Oakland on April 7-10 placed him sixth in all of Region 1.
In other events, the local gymnast posted a score of 13.95 in the pommel, which placed him 12th; scores of 14.35 and 14.95 in the rings and vault, respectively, each of which placed him tied for 11th; and a score of 13.85 in the parallel bars, which placed him 20th.
Along with his teammates, Northern California narrowly placed second behind Southern California for the team championship, falling by a 430.95 to 430.20 margin.
