Authorities have released more details on Friday’s accident resulting in two deaths.

The two men killed in the afternoon wreck on Highway 156 near Lucy Brown Lane were from Stockton. They were passengers in a 2001 Chevrolet Metro driven by Pedro Vargas, 45, also from Stockton, according to the California Highway Patrol. Vargas sustained major injuries to his ribs, pelvis and head, along with internal bleeding, according to the CHP.

The San Benito County Coroner’s Office, run by the sheriff, must release the fatal victims’ identities, but an office detective could not be reached to confirm the names.

According to the CHP, Vargas was eastbound and lost control of the car at about 2:45 p.m., driving it into the right shoulder and over-correcting into the westbound lane, according to the CHP. A 2008 Acura TL driven by Lisa Howard, 49, of Carmichael, struck the Chevy. The Chevy then continued moving in the westbound lane and was struck by a 2006 Volvo big rig.

Authorities pronounced the fatal victims dead at the scene and transported the driver to Regional Medical Center of San Jose.

There were no other injuries reported, and investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor. It is still under investigation.
