Herbert Charles Schulze passed away peacefully in Reno, NV, on October 26, 2011, at the age of 94.
Herbert, or “Sox” as he was known, was born and raised in Hollister, and graduated from Hollister High School in 1935 where he excelled in football and track. Sox was the son of Pearl Hawkins Schulze and Herbert Alexander Schulze. He attended Stanford University where he played polo and majored in civil engineering.
After graduating from Stanford, Sox worked on the island of Kauai for two years, where he also coached a local football team. He returned to the mainland to join the Army after Pearl Harbor. He met Marie-Jeanne Raphael while stationed in San Francisco and they married in 1943. Sox served in the Army in England and Germany after World War II and they returned to California in 1952 where they raised their family.
After leaving the Army, Sox received a law degree, and practiced law in California and Nevada into his 90s. When Marie-Jeanne suffered a stroke in 1992, Sox cared tenderly for her at home. Sox was an outstanding athlete, inventor, and a marvelous storyteller as well as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Sox was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Marie-Jeanne Raphael Schulze. He is survived by his son, Herbert Richard Schulze of Truckee, his daughter Nanette Schulze Stringer of Palo Alto, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
At Sox’s request, there will be no services. Donations in Sox’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
