Authorities have identified the Hollister man killed Wednesday after he fell from a car during a street race and was run over.
Jose A. Garcia, Jr., 33, was the victim of the incident on Buena Vista Road shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators are searching for more information on the possible homicide, sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Lamonica said.
The sheriff’s office, the Hollister Police Department and the Hollister Fire Department reported to the scene at the 700 block of Buena Vista Road when they received reports of a man lying in the middle of the roadway. When officers arrived on scene they found Garcia face down.
Three witnesses reported that two cars were racing westbound when the passenger of the lead car fell out and was run over by the pursuing car. Afterward, the two cars fled the scene, Lamonica said.
As of this morning, authorities had not determined an official cause of death, he said. They are treating it as a homicide, though.
Investigators still are searching for the two cars described as a gray, four-door sedan and a “yellowish” old Cadillac.
Anyone with more information is urged to call the San Benito Sheriff’s Office and Sgt. Lamonica at 636-4080.
