Get ready, set, prepare

Where to find it: Ready – www.ready.gov

Who runs the site: The site is run by Homeland Security staff.

Who is likely to use the site: Anyone who wants to make sure that their disaster preparedness plan is up to date. The site has information for families, businesses and kids.

Pros: The site is very easy to navigate from the main page. Users can choose to click on “Ready America,” which offers advice for families and homes; “Ready Businesses,” which offers advice for companies; and “Ready Kids,” a site geared to children.

Once users select which option they are preparing for – home or business – they can get a list that has all the items they should have in an emergency from water to non-perishable foods, to things such as a supply of prescription medications and matches in a waterproof container.

The next step is to make a plan that can include information on what a family should do in an emergency or who family members should contact. This section also has advice on what to do for families in a moving vehicle at the time a disaster hits or those who live in high-rise apartments.

The last step is to be informed, and it includes a list of specific disasters that people can prepare for such as earthquakes, extreme heat and fire.

All of the documents are available in easy-to-download PDFs so people can print them out and work together to complete the plans.

The kids’ section has much of the same information, but it has games and a scavenger hunt that make the tips more accessible to children.

Cons: The only downside to the site is that a side page that is supposed to connect users to local agencies that deal with emergency preparedness doesn’t have all that many contacts listed, and San Benito is left off the list.
