Bette is now reunited in heaven with her beloved husband of 51 ½ years, Paul C. Shadford.
Bette was born Bette Ann Lovelace in San Diego, CA and moved to San Francisco where she attended Galileo High School. She and Paul met on a snowbound train on Donner Summit while both were serving in the Navy during WWII. Bette was headed back to Washington, DC where she was a cartographer. Her chart, which was granted an Admiral’s Citation, is now on display at the Military Museum in Old Town, Sacramento.
After Paul’s death in 1996, Bette married Edmond Mauberret in 1998 and moved to Mill Valley. Ed was a high school classmate whom she reconnected with at their 50th high school reunion planning committee meetings. Ed passed away in 2004 and Bette moved back to her home of 30 years at The Villages in San Jose where she resided until she had a stroke in late 2004. In 2005, she moved to an assisted living apartment near The Villages where she remained until her passing.
Bette is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ricardo Rivera of Morgan Hill, CA; and her son, Donald Shadford of Pocatello, ID. She also leaves behind many dear friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her ashes will be scattered, along with those of her first born son, James Allen, off the coast of Carmel where Paul’s ashes were scattered. May they rest together in eternal peace.
