Our first Red Phone caller of the week, the Crimson Crusader’s self-proclaimed “No. 1 fan,” asked what was going on with the speed bumps on Vine Street.

The Crimson Crusader touched on this issue last week after the bumps had been removed and then replaced. Those speed bumps, it seems, were a little too high. Various callers referred to them as “launching ramps,” “mountains” and “road blocks.”

The Crimson Crusader called Hollister civil engineer David Rubcic to find out what was being done about the speed bumps. He said the giant speed bumps had been removed and would be replaced with more appropriate bumps Monday. Rubcic said the tall speed bumps installed earlier this week were the result of a mistake.

It’s a Jungle Out There

Our next Red Phone caller of the week, a Hollister resident, asked the Crimson Crusader to get something done about 3-foot weeds growing in the yard of a vacant house on Virginia Street. Our caller said the house had become an “eyesore.”

The Crimson Crusader called Hollister Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless to see what could be done. Chambless said he already had been working on this case but has been having trouble tracking down the owner of the home. Nonetheless, Chambless hopes to get the property cleaned up posthaste.

And So It Begins

Our next Red Phone caller of the week, a local woman, asked the Crimson Crusader what was going on near Gabilan Hills school on Santa Ana Road in Hollister this week. Our caller said she spotted some heavy-duty equipment in the area digging up a vacant lot.

Well, dearest caller, what you saw was construction work beginning on the Highway 25 bypass. The Crimson Crusader went out to the site to find out what exactly was going on, and some friendly construction workers informed our hero that they were removing sewer pipe to make way for the bypass.
