University of California, Santa Barbara dean’s honors list
The following students have been named to the dean’s honors list at the University of California, Santa Barbara, for the winter quarter. To earn this honor, students must have a 3.75 grade-point average on a program of 12 or more graded units in the college of letters and science, or 3.5 in the college of engineering. Lacey Villa
Lacey Villa, daughter of Lori Workman of Riverside and Ernie Villa of Gilroy, will graduate from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, on June 11 with a bachelor of science degree in apparel merchandising and management. Lacey has received multiple dean’s list awards and is a member of high standing with the Chi Omega Sorority. She is a 2001 graduate of Gilroy HIgh School and is currently a manager with J.C. Penney in Southern California. Lacey is also the granddaughter of the late Judge John M. Klarich.
HONORS
Clovis Rodeo Queen 2006
Congratulations to Sarah Lomanto of Hollister and Kari Ann Moreo of Gilroy, who both competed in the 2006 Clovis Rodeo Queen Competition. The ladies each competed in the Rodeo Queen Horsemanship Competition on April 22 and at the Rodeo Queen’s Dinner, where they were each judged on their personality, poise and apperance.
Doris Bateman
Doris Bateman was recently honored at the Flower Lovers meeting for being chosen as the YMCA Volunteer of the Year. Doris is a past president of the Flower Lovers and is currently running a senior exercise class at the Senior Center.
Ashley Schofield
Gilroy native Ashley Schofield is a senior at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass. She is studying political science with a minor in sociology. Ashley spent the fall semester in Washington D.C., studying in The American University’s Washington Semester Program and the American Politics Program.
The program consisted of a half seminar component and a half internship component. Ashley had seminar classes that varied from lectures with her professors to meeting with high-profile people in Washington D.C. She also worked in the office of Senator Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, as an intern.Her duties included attending hearings and briefings, giving tours of the U.S. Capitol, and assisting legislative correspondents.
Ashley was born in Gilroy, where her grandmother Frances Lugo and uncle Joseph Lugo live.
Ashley will return to Springfield and graduate this month. She plans to enter graduate school to receive her master’s degree in public administration or public policy. She hopes to someday be involved in the legislative process, concentrating on issues such as education and health care.
ENGAGEMENT
Washburn-Guenther Jennifer Washburn and James Guenther will be married July 1 in Charleston, S.C. The groom, son of Bill and Nancy Guenther, is a 2001 graduate of Gilroy High School. He will graduate in May from Bob Jones University. The bride, daughter of Brian and Julie Washburn, will also graduate from Bob Jones University with a degree in nursing. After marriage, the newlyweds will reside in Charlotte, S.C., where James will be pursuing a career with the fire department.
Houseal-Zapien
Sabrina LeAnne Houseal and Francisco Vincent Zapien will be married Oct. 15. The high school sweethearts, both graduates of Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, have been together 10 years. The bride is the daughter of David and Lois Corbet and Dr. Thomas Houseal. She is a certified massage therapist and office manager of a chiropractic office in Morgan Hill. The groom is the son of Arcadia Pulido and the late Manuel Zapien. He is a bookseller at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Gilroy and attends Mission College.
