at the age of 95.
Rosemary Herbert died Saturday morning at her home in Hollister at the age of 95.

She was born at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose on October 9, 1909 as the grandaughter of James Hudner and James Kelly – original Hollister settlers in the Rancho San Justo Association. She resided from birth to death on the original family ranch purchased in 1863. She attended Sacred Heart School in Hollister and was part of the original graduating class of Serra High School. She also attended San Benito Junior College and San Jose Normal School. In 1930 she began teaching first and second grade at Ausaymaus School. 

In the summer of 1939, she toured Europe and was on one of the last ships back to the States before the war started. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Member and former treasurer of the Sacred Heart Altar Society, Catholic Ladies Aide and a member of the American Assn. of University Women. Rosemary was also an avid bridge player.

She married the late Philip V. Herbert also of Hollister on August 17, 1940, who passed away in 1967.

She is the mother of Philip C. Herbert of Reno, Sarah Herbert, Pat Herbert and his wife, Patti, Kitty Herbert and Joe Herbert all of Hollister; grandmother of Elizabeth Barnett of Hollister, Philip V. Herbert of Portland, Ore., Ned Herbert of Port Townsend, Wash., Michael Herbert of New Mexico, Robin, Becky, Laura and Jennifer Herbert all of San Francisco. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles F. McNamee and William E. McNamee. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be offered Tuesday evening at 7pm at the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home, 870 San Benito St. Friends may also visit at the funeral home on Wednesday from noon to 8pm and Thursday morning until service time. Funeral services will begin Thursday afternoon at 1:30pm from the funeral home and proceed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fifth and College streets for a funeral Mass commencing at 2pm. Burial and graveside services will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Hollister.

Contributions are preferred to Visiting Nurses Assn/Hospice of Hollister or the St. Benedict Church Building Fund.
