Elvin E. “Brick” Goff died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Hazel Hawkins Northside Convalescent Hospital. He was 94.
Goff was born May 15, 1909, in Hollister and as a young man, along with his brother, Stanley Goff, ran a dairy on the Dooling ranch in the Lone Tree area for 10 years. He then worked in apricots for his father before moving to San Luis Obispo where he worked on steam engines as a machinist for 15 years, being most proud of working on the Daylight Limited 4449 for Southern Pacific Railroad.
He then moved back to Hollister where he was an orchardist in the San Juan Valley for 30 years before retiring and renting the land to Christopher Ranch. His hobbies included fishing and talking with his friends about the old days. He said, “In those days, I could ride a horse down the main street of Hollister with my dogs and not see a lot of people.”
Goff was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Mae Goff, who died in 2001. He is survived by his two sons, John E. Goff and Eugene E. Goff, who live in the San Juan Valley; three granddaughters Susan Strom, Cindy Jordan and Tamara Jackson, all of Colorado; six great-grandchildren also of Colorado; and his sister-in-law Dorothy Goff of Long Barn, Calif.
Friends can pay their respects Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, from noon to 8 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the IOOF Cemetery in Hollister. Rev. Jim Achilles of Grace Bible Church will officiate.
