Hollister resident
Hollister resident Mildred Duran Luna died Monday, Jan 13, 2003 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital. She was 81.
Mrs. Luna was born in Pueblo, Colo. and later lived in Salinas before moving to Hollister. During World War II she worked at the Navy shipyard in Alameda as a “Rosie the Riveter.” She later became active with the United Farm Workers labor movement with Cesar Chavez and was instrumental in designing the UFW flag. One of her most memorable moments was opening her home to Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, a UFW supporter, during his bid for the presidency in 1968.
She was retired after working for 18 years at the cannery in Hollister and enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Joe Saldivar, Dionicio Guttirez, Arnold Guttirez, Gilbert Guttirez, David Guttirez and George Luna, all of Hollister, Jesse Guttirez of Hanford, Connie Lopez of Robbins, Genevieve Valdez of Santa Ana, Ruben Guttirez and Sal Luna, both of Portland, Ore., and Betty Nash of Hillsboro, Ore.; her brothers and sisters, Jenny Lucas, Kenneth Duran, Jenry Duran, Raymond Duran, Sadie Canez and Mary Laguna, all of Hollister, Ysidro Duran and Isabel Vasquez, both of San Jose and Marsha Roque of Redlands; 34 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Guttirez; her brother, Philip Duran; and her grandson, Jacob Madrid.
Visitation will be Friday afternoon at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited Friday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass will be offered Saturday at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
