Long-time Hollister resident
Long-time Hollister resident Henry R. Duran died Monday, March 24, 2003 at his home in Hollister. He was 77.
Mr. Duran had lived in Hollister since he was 7 years old. He worked for TriValley Growers and was a member of Sacred Heart Church and Teamsters Union Local 890. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He and his wife, Carmen, celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary March 1. His family described him as a loving husband and father who took care of his siblings, nieces and nephews. He was known to his nephews as “the family barber” and was a creative woodworker, which kept him busy in his garage.
He is survived by his wife, Carmen Duran of Hollister; his children, Carlos Duran, Yolanda Duran, Sylvia Duran and Lydia Maldonado and her husband, Robert, all of Hollister, and Gloria Duran Martinez and her husband, Alex, of Freedom; his brothers and sisters, Jennie Lucas, Mary Laguna, Sadie Canez, Ray Duran and Kenneth Duran, all of Hollister, Marsha Roque of Redlands and Isabel Vasquez and Sid Duran, both of San Jose; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Genaro and Maria Duran; and his sisters and brothers, Mildred Luna, Anita Duran, Ysidro Duran and Philip Duran.
Visitation will be Friday, March 28 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home, and Saturday after 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Friends can also pay their respects Friday after 6 p.m. at St. Benedict Church, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, proceeding to Sacred Heart Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military rites by Hollister VFW Post 9242.
Memorials are preferred to Hospice or Jovenes de Antano, in care of Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home.
