Long-time Hollister resident Max E. Busby died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at Hazel Hawkins Northside Convalescent Hospital. He was 86.
Mr. Busby was born in Grace, Idaho in 1916, the grandson of a member of Brigham Young’s wagon train in the settlement of Utah. When he was a boy, his family moved to Sacramento, where they farmed land west of the city’s downtown area. He worked throughout California as an electrician with his father, living in Richmond, Redwood City, Santa Barbara, Lompoc, Salinas, Modesto, Hollister and many other areas. He also helped build Liberty Ships during World War II.
He came to Hollister in 1971 and was a general contractor who built many homes in the Sunnyslope and Ridgemark areas, as well as other parts of the county.
Mr. Busby was a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He enjoyed woodworking and after his retirement made cedar chests and bird house Christmas lawn decorations for his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Pierce and her husband, Ray, of Hollister; his son, Greg Busby and his wife, Penny, of Gardnerville, Nev.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Mathews Busby.
The Rosary will be recited Sunday, March 23 at 7 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated Monday, March 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Benedict Church. Inurnment will follow at the St. Benedict Columbarium.
A reception will follow the services at the home of Ray and Peggy Pierce, 390 Tina Drive.
