Roy Richard Kaiser

Roy Richard “Dick” Kaiser, devoted husband, father and friend to many, died Sept. 8, 2003, in San Diego, Calif., with his daughter by his side.

He was born in North Dakota in 1925 and raised in Monterey. He later lived in Hollister, Salinas and Sacramento.

He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He attended gunnery school at the University of Oklahoma. He loved his country and military with unwavering pride and passion. He said his only regret was not retiring from the military.

He worked for the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company for 36 years and retired early.

His wife of 48 years, Alice Jean Roebuck, passed away in 1997.

He is survived by his daughter Pam Kaiser-Silva, son Michael, daughter-in-law Norma, son-in-law Harold Silva, granddaughter Lauren Silva, and three grandsons, Eric, Michael Jr., and John Michael. He shared the last five years with his very special friend/companion/significant other, Audrey.

He lived his entire life by the Navy Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. He was a gentleman and gentle “giant” of a man who was soft spoken, cordial, kind, admirable, gracious, witty, humorous, mischievous, patient, tolerant and noble. He was an unusually private man, spiritual and serene. He had true integrity, except when it came to his own health issues. For six years, he battled numerous life-threatening illnesses and never complained. He ‘fibbed” about his health and was such a people-pleaser, he told doctors and nurses what he thought they wanted to hear.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Association of Aviation Ordnancemen, Telephone Pioneers of America and Carmichael Elks. He was a lover of all types of music, an avid reader, who was self-taught and self-educated and a smooth dancer who was light on his feet.

His genuine smile, contagious laugh, handsome face, twinkling blue eyes and generous heart will always be remembered by those whose lives he touched. He will be sorely missed by all. Memories keep those we love close to us forever.

Meke Aloha, Richard (Dick), Dad, until we meet again. God bless you and keep you until then.

Services and interment for Richard and Alice were held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, Oct. 2, 2003.

Donations may be made to American veteran organizations. Arrangements were made by North County Cremation Services.
