Maria L. Smith died at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital in Hollister on Sunday, Nov. 23. She was 95.

She was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

She was a homebody who enjoyed being with her family. She loved to cook her nationality dishes, singing, and telling stories. She moved Hollister seven months ago from Salinas where she had lived for 14 years to be with her daughter and son-in-law. While in Salinas, she worked for Schilling McCormack Spices Store since it first opened. There is a plaque about her career at the store. She worked for them for 20 years before retiring.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Rose and Steve Adair of San Juan Bautista; grandchildren Richard Valdez of Gilroy, Jim (Laura) Valdez of Sacramento, Michele Ness of Salinas and Jamie Parslow of Seaside; great grandchildren Valarie Valdez, Daniel Valdez and Alexis Parslow; and sister Laura Vidaurre of Guatemala City.

As per her wishes, arrangements have been made for private cremation and inurnment at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Crematory.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial celebration of her life, Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home in Hollister.
