San Juan Bautista resident Charles “Chuck” Bowman died Saturday at his residence after a period of failing health. He was 84.

Originally from Weaverville, Calif., Bowman became a county resident in 1957. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army Aircorps and received an American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal. He was also a member of the American Legion Post in Hollister.

Bowman was a bartender at the Smoke House and the Town Club in Hollister for many years. Retiring from there, he went to work for Soil Serve where he retired after 16 years as office manager.

He is survived by wide Luverne Bowman of San Juan; sister Lois Finney of Oroville, Calif.; daughter Cindy Quinlan and husband Bill of Salinas; daughter Cheryl Zamora of Santa Clara; son Charles “Charlie” E. Bowman of San Juan; daughter Jeannie Martin and husband Trini of San Juan; son Edward Bowman of Salinas; son Mike Bowman and wife Nancy of Tulsa, Okla.; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

As per Bowman’s request, arrangements have been made for private cremation at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Crematory. His remains will be interred privately in the Veterans Section of the San Juan District Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Heartland Hospice, care of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home.
