WBC Interim Welterweight World Champion Robert Guerrero celebrates following his unanimous decision victory over former Two-Time Welterweight World Champion Andre Berto on November 24, 2012 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is expected to fight Gilroy native and interim WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero on May 4 in Las Vegas, ESPN UK reported Sunday.

Mayweather is expected to fight May 4 and Sept. 14 this year. Saul Alvarez had reportedly been considered along with Guerrero to fight Mayweather in the May 4 event at the MGM Grand. However, Alvarez is reportedly slotted to fight on the event’s undercard, and Alvarez’s trainer, Jose “Chepo” Reynoso, told Boxingscene that Alvarez has a “guarantee” that he will fight Mayweather in September.

Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) retained his interim WBC welterweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Andre Berto in Ontario, Calif., on Nov. 24.

The 29-year-old Guerrero has sought a fight against Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) since.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told the Gilroy Dispatch on Dec. 20 that he is diligently working to secure a fight for Guerrero against Mayweather.

Reynoso told Boxingscene that Alvarez’s fight against Mayweather is already locked in for September.

“Eric Gomez, (vice president) of Golden Boy Promotions, came to Guadalajara and we agreed that Saul and Floyd would share the evening in May,” Reynoso told Boxingscene.

“We already reached a financial agreement, and a guarantee that we will face (Mayweather) in September in Las Vegas. We believe that it is time for ‘Canelo’ to show what he is made of.”
