Local resident Brittany Slaton was chosen Miss California Rodeo at the 99th annual Salinas rodeo.

The California Rodeo Salinas, which runs July 18-21 at the Salinas Sports Complex, seeks candidates for Miss California Rodeo Salinas.

The contest consists of horsemanship, personality, appearance and scholarship categories. The 2013 contest will begin July 17 and Miss California Rodeo Salinas 2012, Tracy Hinson, will pass on the title during the opening performance of the rodeo July 18. The winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship to be used at the college of her choice, a trophy belt buckle, the use of a two-horse trailer for one year and will wear the gold and silver tiara. The winner will travel to various events promoting the California Rodeo and educate people about the event, traditions and more.

The competition is open to women 18 to 21 years of age, and contestants must be at least 18 years old by July 1 without having turned 22 by July 31. Contestants must be sponsored by either a recognized horsemen’s organization or another recognized community organization (not commercial). If any contestant entering the 2013 Miss California Rodeo Salinas contest currently holds a queen title representing another rodeo or organization, her reign must have ended prior to the start of the 2013 Miss California Rodeo Salinas contest in order to compete.
