Dear Editor,
Now that the 2007 Thanksgiving is behind us I’d like to say we gratefully appreciate our families, the ones who were present and the ones that in some ways salute us with a card or phone call. We are thankful for the turkey dinner and dessert, and the glass of wine was fabulous!
Some of us might gain a couple of pounds, but according to the late news, a few pounds is not as bad as we have heard before. Two pounds for Thanksgiving, four pounds for Christmas and New Years, two pounds for Easter totals eight more pounds. So What? Then we have six months to diet. If we lose one-and-a-half pounds per month, after six months we’ll be ready to start enjoying the holidays again. A strict diet all year-round is not fair. If we are able to follow a strict diet we are able to enjoy the good and the bad.
Celebrating with us on Thanksgiving, we had the honor and privilege of having Jack Trowbridge, a friend of our family which in years past included Clara, his late, great wife of so many years. Jack is a great veteran, and we enjoyed seeing his photos in his uniform in the Free Lance so proudly representing his country on Veterans Day. Jack, who is about 90 years old, served in the United States Air Force for 27 years; first as a pilot and then he served his last years as an instructor. If I’m right, he grew up in Hollister then married his wife Clara and they were blessed with a son, Dr. John Trowbridge, who today practices medicine in Texas. Jack spends part of the year with his son, but it seems like Jack’s heart is always in Hollister where he lives alone in his home on Cienega Road. Jack is a great citizen who never forgets what is to be honest, to have good morals, to be a good neighbor and friend. We salute you in your uniform. You look like a real captain. Thank you for your three hours of company spent together discussing most of the things that have changed in the world. You’re a great American having spent much of your life doing good things for your country. We wish you many more years to come.
One thing I feel guilty about and you should, too, is for all the turkeys who give their lives so we can enjoy great dinners.
Sorry, but it seems like everything that comes to this world has its purpose. I hope that everyone that shared their food remembered a prayer in their honor.
I’d like to finish by giving thanks to our leaders who have kept this county in peace.
God bless everyone.
Only my opinion.
Amadeu Lima, Hollister
