One thing I shall miss in the Free Lance; a second thing I
should love to miss; and a third I’ll hope to see more often.
1. I shall miss the warm, funny, civilizing insights to the
human spirit so often evoked in Herman Wrede’s historic pieces; the
zany fantasies of his Rotary-like
”

”
crowd; and Herman’s charming and thoughtful profiles of
residents of San Benito County as he has known them through years
of colorful but sometimes bumpy and barbarous change.

I shall miss his rare tone and humor and hope to find them again in some infinity of “final words.”
2. I concur with those who object to your new anonymous and craven “poison pen” voice for disaffected readers. Have they no sense of honor?
No doubt this venting of distrust and dislike may spice up tabloids in Chicago or Detroit, where violence may even seem comforting in its monstrous closeness; but in vulnerable small towns it throbs with the unpleasant threat of civic mayhem.
3. Why do you not carry Molly Ivins’ memorable columns more often? Do you fear her incisive political truths as too powerful for local consumption?
These comments are of course intended kindly and helpfully with the best will imaginable, but if nothing happens I shall probably be forced to cancel.
