Dear Editor,

I have a very simple solution to the Don Pacheco Y traffic problem. In fact it is so easy, it’s hard. The hard part is, nobody wants to listen to a good idea, and make it work. The idea is simple. Use Freeway Service Patrol tow vehicles to ‘pace’ traffic eastbound at selected intervals. They are already funded, painted, radio equipped and have trained drivers. All they need is a little co-ordination with the CHP, add roadway signage, and it’s done! There would be no left turn back up because the ‘pace’ vehicle would keep the idiots from taking up space on the eastbound downhill run towards the “Y.” Since traffic is already stop and go, what difference would it make to add in a ‘pace’ vehicle at Bloomfield and run 25-35mph and let traffic ahead keep moving? If properly timed, it would create huge spaces for left turn traffic. Big rigs could be used with signage … asking them to keep the speed down and help create natural breaks in traffic as they climb slow eastbound from San Felipe Rd., and then proceed downhill towards the intersection slowly. Like I said, it’s so easy it’s hard! This would also allow CHP to be used in other areas to enforce the law, and not have to eat up much needed funding for other CHP projects. If need be, I’ll even volunteer my time to go out there and show them how to do it if they can’t figure this out! All that needs to be done is to try it. I’ll be more than glad to be an advisor if the powers that be can’t make it work.
