Abel Alves Ferreira, 88, died on Oct. 24, 2006, at Valley Gardens Convalescent Home and Rehab Center after a recent hip surgery.

Abel was born August 3, 1918 in Newbedford, Mass. At the age of 3, he went back to Portugal where he was raised. He came back to the United States at the age of 18, because in America, you could vote for the crook of your choice, and he valued the right to vote. He had a wonderful sense of humor.

He had owned a dairy in San Jose in the 1950’s, in the 60’s he moved his family to Gilroy, where he lived for over 40 years and retired from the Gilroy Unified School District.

He liked to go deep sea fishing and loved to play Yahtzee. At the end of his life, he loved his red wine with his meals, and he enjoyed his good old country music.

He is survived by two daughters, seven grandchildren and a brother in Brazil. He was preceded in death by his wife Aldina, son Abel, and daughter Aldina.

Chapel Service and viewing will be at Daneri Montuary in Jackson, CA, 415 Broadway, on Sat., Oct., 28, at 11 am. A grave site service will be held in Gilroy on Mon., Oct. 30th at 2 pm at St. Mary Cemetery, 11 First St., Gilroy.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, send memorial contributions to St. Mary Church in Gilroy.
