A Wyoming man was killed and a Salinas man was injured in an accident on Highway 152 when a big rig loaded with ice rolled over Friday, the California Highway Patrol said.

Brian Burns, 43, of Cheyenne, Wyo. was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on Highway 152 west of Bell Station, a spokeswoman with the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office said.

Larry Burch, 50, of Salinas was taken by a Cal-Star helicopter to San Jose Medical Center where he was being treated for a possible head injury and complaint of pain to his chest, the CHP said.

The 6:10 a.m. accident happened when Burns was driving a 1977 Freightliner tractor-trailer rig, owned by Nielsen Trucking of Salinas, in the eastbound lanes of Highway 152, the CHP said.

Crash investigators said the big rig gradually drifted off the southern edge of the highway for an unknown reason where it rolled over landing on its right side.

Burns, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was reportedly thrown around the truck cabin and landed on top of Burch in the sleeper berth, the CHP said.

Investigators said neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the crash. The accident is still under investigation.

Friday’s deadly crash was the latest in several fatal wrecks on Highway 152.

On Sept. 4, a 75-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman, both from Coalinga were killed in a head-on collision that shut down Pacheco Pass Highway for more than an hour. Harold William Fyler and his wife Maria Fyler died on westbound Highway 152 just east of Casa de Fruta.

On April 25, a San Jose youth was killed and two others were seriously injured in a head-on collision with a big-rig on Highway 152 near Soap Lake.

Adrian Paniagua, 12, of San Jose was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries he sustained in the crash, the CHP said.

On Feb. 7, a 15-year-old Los Banos girl died from injuries she sustained in a car accident at the intersection of Highway 152 and Frazier Lake Road.

The youth was a passenger in a 1991 Honda Civic driven by Dolores Majia, 32, of Los Banos who was also injured in the crash.
