The first Hollister Airshow drew more people than planners expected for the inaugural event. According to Airport Manager Mike Chambless, they had been hoping for 1,500 visitors to the two-day event over Memorial Day Weekend.
They ended up with 2,500 visitors May 29 and another 1,000 on May 30. Chambless said at least half the visitors were from out of town.
With a budget of $15,000 they did not spend much time advertising the event.
The event included the aerobatics of Eddie Andreini, Dr. ‘D’ Frank Donnelly, Vicky Benzing and Jacqui Warda.
‘They are committed to make this event work, and I appreciate that,” Chambless said. “They have been extremely happy with the event and they are having a blast.”
In addition to the performers, there were skydivers who landed at the airport, including Hollister Mayor Victor Gomez who took the dive to kick off the event on Saturday. Historical planes were also on display throughout the event as well as planes for sale.
Chambless said he will prevent earnings from the show to the council at the next meeting and he said he hopes to get direction by July on plans for next year.
