Long-time Hollister resident Alejandro “Alex” Cantu died Sunday, Sept. 7, at Palo Alto Veterans Hospital. He was 77.

Cantu served in the United States Army for four years and saw action in World War II. He was an employee at Portola Motors in Watsonville.

He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and a regular member of Jovenes de Antano Senior Center.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Glenda Martinez and son Alex Cantu II.

He is survived by his wife Mary Lupe Cantu; children Connie Martinez of Merced, Nina Gonzalez of Salinas, Alex (Gloria) Martinez of Freedom, Adam (Rosie) Cantu, Hector (Olivia) Cantu, Linda Cantu and Lucy Cantu, all of Watsonville; brothers Juan, Luis and Francisco Cantu, all of Texas; sisters Eglanita Cantu, Faustina Molina of Watsonville, Viola, Maria and Anita Hilario. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 11:15 a.m. at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2410 Fallon Road in Hollister.
