Alfred John “Al” Solano died in San Francisco Thursday, Sept. 11. He was 68.
Solano grew up in Hollister and graduated from San Benito High School in 1953. He then served with distinction in the United States Air Force from 1954-1958. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Fresno State University in 1962.
He worked for the Post Office in Hollister and in the San Benito County probation office before becoming a teacher at San Benito High School. He retired in 1969 and moved to Washington, D.C. to explore the world of politics and public service. He became the special assistant to Patricia Hitt, who was Assistant Secretary for Community and Field Services in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. In 1972, Solano moved to San Francisco and continued his career as an employee of the federal government. At one point, he was the head of the regional office of the Health, Education and Welfare department that covered the western United States. His final years with the federal government were spent as an investigator with the Office of the Inspector General in charge of medical fraud cases.
Solano is survived by his brothers Gilbert Solano of San Jose, Felix Solano of Hollister, Robert Solano of Salinas, and his sisters Connie Rodriguez of Hollister and Nancy Martinez of Hollister, numerous nieces, nephews, great aunts and uncles and many friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday Sept. 20, at 1:30 pm at Sacred Heart Church, 540 College St. in Hollister. A reception will follow at Dunne Park Clubhouse, 602 West St. in Hollister from 2:30-5:30 pm.
