I read with disdain a comment allegedly made by a San Benito County Supervisor in a guest column written by Ignacio Velazquez on Friday, Nov. 14.

The writer explained how the proposed Center for the Arts planning has all but disappeared and a focal point for Hollister’s downtown “facelift” may not have a future.

The County Supervisor allegedly said, “If we provide funding for arts programs, people will eventually want an arts center. It’s bad enough that we have to deal with that damn library.”

What a slap in the face for the hard working county librarian and library employees, the dedicated volunteers and devoted Friends of the Library Board members.

Most community leaders embrace the libraries in their communities, supporting them any way they can. Even in a lagging economy.

The library volunteers and Friends Board members donate thousands of hours for the benefit of their library and ultimately, for their community, providing programs, helping in the library and raising funds to supplement the library’s budget.

After 20 years of dedicated service to our local county library as a volunteer and Board member of the Friends of the Library, I am angry and offended that an elected county official would (allegedly) make such a statement.

Our county library continues to provide great library services to this community, even through poor economic times.

Hollister
