Dear Editor:

There is a serious paradox in the effort to referenda the Board of Supervisors’ adoption of the San Benito County Growth Control Initiative.

Proponents of the referendum are gathering signatures with the pitch “Protect your Vote.” But if their effort succeeds, the referendum will take away the right to vote on growth in San Benito County. That is what the initiative gives the voters.

The referendum, however, would restore the majority of the Board – the power to increase growth rate without voter approval. So, in the name of protecting the vote, developers, land speculators and the referendum proposal would take away the right of voters to control growth. That would be unfavorable for the people of San Benito County.
