Gilroy – Splittsville may not be where Gavilan wants to be but it is miles ahead of where the Rams were last year.

Gavilan split its third straight doubleheader Tuesday, dropping the first game to West Hills College 4-3 and coming back to win the second 7-2. Nisa Ceballos had four RBI in the twin bill.

“It’s encouraging,” said Ceballos, the rightfielder who played last year for the Gilroy Shockers traveling team. “This is only preseason and the team’s doing great. Imagine when we get other pitchers who can help out Jen.”

For now, Jen McBain handling the pitching. She allowed five hits and struck out eight in the opener. The right-handed McBain came back with another five-hitter and one strikeout in the second game.

The Rams (3-3) fell behind 3-1 in the opener but tied it in the sixth. Amanda Perez tripled, Amanda Jackson was safe on an error and Ceballos had an RBI single that turned into two runs on a Falcon error.

Jodie Ban tripled and Sabrina Morales doubled in the seventh to bring in the winning run for West Hills.

Gavilan was in control in the second game after Ceballos’ two-run single during a three-run third put the Rams ahead for good. Hayli Cloud hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it 4-2.

McBain would have had a two-run homer in the fifth but it was ruled an RBI triple and she was declared out when a teammate touched her before she crossed the plate.

Ceballos and Angelina Fernandez had RBI singles in the sixth. Also, the Rams turned their first double play of the season in the seventh on a ground ball that went from Andrea Castaneda to Perez to Jackson.

“We played well in the first game but made baserunning errors,” Gavilan coach Nikki Dequin-Tompson said. “In the second game, we were much better and in control the whole game.”
