Anzar rallied from a four-run deficit to tie Pajaro Valley at 6-6 and its non-league baseball game ended in a tie after seven innings Thursday.

After trailing 6-2 after 2 1/2 innings, the Hawks (1-0-1) chipped away with two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings to salvage the draw.

“I was very happy, even though it was a sloppy game,” Anzar coach Andrew Barragan said. “Coming back from 6-2 to tie it up was big.”

The Hawks found themselves in a hole quickly, when Pajaro leadoff hitter Aaron Navarette blasted a home run on the first pitch of the game. The Grizzlies pushed another run across when the next batter walked, stole second and scored on an error.

But Anzar didn’t wait long to rebound. Adrian Monroy, who also went the distance on the mound, led off the game with a hit and Adam Wilkinson followed with a hit.

Austin McKinney bounced a ball to short that was booted to allow one run to score. Scott Benson then delivered an RBI groundout to tie the game.

In the third, Pajaro distanced itself a bit with a four-run rally to make it 6-2.

But the Hawks answered again in the bottom half of the inning. Monroy walked, Wilkinson reached on an error and McKinney got an infield single to load the bases.

Benson got his second RBI groundout of the game and Massimo Marra-Biggs delivered an infield single to trim the deficit to 6-4.

Monroy, who was 3-for-3 with a walk and struck out eight over her seven innings pitched, jumpstarted a fourth-inning rally with a leadoff single in the fourth. McKinney also reached on a single and a pair of Grizzly errors allowed Anzar to tie it.

It stayed that way for the final three innings of regulation and the umpires called the game after seven innings.

“Monroy didn’t give up, he kept us in the game,” Barragan said of his senior pitcher.

Barragan was happy with the way the team did, especially considering much of the early-season work he’s done has centered around the pitchers.

“I have yet to really work with our hitters, so we’re ahead of schedule,” Barragan said. “The good thing is we’re putting the ball in play.”
