San Juan Bautista – Anzar rebounded from its first loss in Mission Trail Athletic League boys basketball action by posting a 66-50 win over King City at home Saturday.

The Hawks (12-5, 4-1 MTAL) lost to Robert Louis Stevenson 54-38 on Thursday after starting the league season with three straight wins.

After trailing by a point after the first quarter, Anzar outscored the Mustangs (4-12, 2-2) 23-10 in the second period to take the lead that it never gave back.

Senior power forward Scott Benson paced the Hawks with 24 points. He connected on 10 of 13 shots from the field and also grabbed 15 rebounds.

Erik Olson provided another strong presence inside. He hit 8 of 10 shots from the field while scoring 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and had five blocked shots.

“It was his most productive game of the season so far,” Anzar coach Ed Cecena said.

Adrian Monroy, the Hawks’ point guard, was limited to four points, but had a solid floor game with seven assists, three steals and only one turnover.

“He set the pace for us,” Cecena said.

Stephen Mockabee added 12 points as the Hawks saw increased production from their supporting cast.

“Everybody contributed, that’s good to see,” Cecena said. “I wanted more contributions from others players and they’re starting to step it up.”

Girls Basketball

King City – Anzar was outscored by double-digits in each of the first two quarters and was routed 56-22 by King City on Saturday.

The Hawks (3-10, 1-4) trailed 20-4 after the first quarter and the Mustangs (8-4, 3-1) pushed the lead to 36-8 by halftime.

The deficit was 50-15 by the start of the fourth quarter, when the pace finally slowed down and Anzar posted a 7-6 advantage in the final period.

Jessica Staley led the Hawks with 16 points. Rachel Baker added four and Shelby Keldson scored two.

Carolyn Madsen led the Mustangs’ attack with 20 points. Lindsey Lazzaroni added 14 points.
