San Jose – The Anzar boys basketball team opened play in the San Jose High Academy Tournament with another stellar effort in earning a 65-43 win over Santa Clara.

Senior forward Scott Benson delivered his fourth straight game of 30 or more points as the Hawks stayed unbeaten on the season at 5-0. Benson, who had a game-high 33 points, lead the area in scoring, averaging 31.8 points per game.

Anzar advances in the winner’s bracket and will face either Evergreen Valley or San Jose High Academy tonight at 7:30.

James Henrard and Steven Mackabee both had strong shooting nights. Henrard nailed two 3-pointers and scored 12 points and Mackabee had 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

Erik Olson also had a solid game. In addition to his four points, Olson delivered some timely assists underneath to Benson and was a good low-post presence.

“I was really impressed with the guys tonight,” coach Ed Cecena said. “It was the best game of the year so far. It’s really encouraging that every game they’re picking it up.”
