Greenfield scores three times in first to win 5-2
A big first inning by the opponent cost the Anzar baseball team for the second straight game as the Hawks fell at home Thursday to Greenfield 5-2.
Anzar dropped a 10-1 decision to Harker on Wednesday, when the host Eagles scored four runs in the first inning and six more in the second.
In this loss, the Bruins (2-5) knocked out three first-inning runs to put the Hawks (2-2-1) in the early hole.
While Anzar fought back, slowing down Greenfield’s offense from the first inning on, it could never recover to get the win.
“One good thing I saw is that once they jumped on us early, we were able to keep our composure and not let it get way out of hand,” Hawks’ coach Andrew Barragan said.
Anzar cut into the lead in the third inning when Adrian Monroy led off with a double and Adam Wilkinson followed with an RBI single.
But Greenfield added two more in the fifth to put the game away.
The Hawks final rally came in the sixth, when Austin McKinney walked and moved over to second on a balk. Scott Benson grounded out to advance him to third and Massimo Marra-Biggs hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the run.
Marra-Biggs allowed the five runs on six hits over his five innings. Benson pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
This game also marked the second straight day that Barragan was disappointed with the patience at the plate, as seven batters taking swings at the first pitch.
“That’s not our ball – they’re not working the count,” Barragan said. “Our competition’s getting a little stiffer and maybe that’s why we’re not scoring the runs.”
Anzar will next host Anchorpoint Christian at 3:30pm Tuesday.
