Austin scores hat trick, Hawks enter next week’s game at Pacific
Collegiate with 5-0 record
San Juan Bautista – The Anzar girls soccer team will enter next week’s crucial league game at Pacific Collegiate with a perfect record after they thumped Marina 10-0 Tuesday in San Juan Bautista.
The win kept the Hawks’ Coastal Athletic League record spotless at 5-0, while the squad has compiled a 6-2 record overall to date.
“We’re all getting geared up for Pacific Collegiate,” coach Deric McLean said. “That’s the opponent we’ve had our eyes set on.”
Anzar and Pacific Collegiate (3-0) have seemingly separated themselves from the rest of the competition in the CAL, and the two league favorites will battle each other next Wednesday, Jan. 16, in Santa Cruz.
The Hawks will enter the contest on the right foot, especially after Tuesday’s 10-0 victory.
Olivia Austin scored a hat trick (three goals) on five shots and Alex Brown found the back of the net twice to lead Anzar. Brianna McCain, Cayley Faurot-Daniels, Erin Deleissegues, Danielle McMath and Christina Tanouye each added a goal for the Hawks.
Despite the undefeated league record, as well as an impressive 32-6 scoring margin, McLean said one area in need of improvement is intensity. Of course, the coach admitted that may be a difficult area to improve upon with the large leads the Hawks have enjoyed this season.
“We have a team filled with high-skilled players,” McLean said. “We’ve been kind of cruising.”
The Hawks will look to continue the scoring surge next week when they invade Santa Cruz to take on Pacific Collegiate, which has recorded a 16-1 scoring margin this season.
Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
“We’ve been aiming towards that with our training. That will be the moment of truth for us,” McLean said of next Wednesday. “The result next week will be a very important one.”
