Morgan Hill – The Anzar High boys basketball team dropped a close one in the consolation championship game of the Sobrato Bulldog Chase, losing 45-44 to Andrew Hill on Friday.
The Hawks (8-4) got 21 points from Scott Benson and 10 from Erik Olson, but it wasn’t enough to prevent them from dropping their second game in three tries in the tournament and losing their fourth out of their past six games.
Jeffrey Peeters paced the Falcons (4-8) with 12 points . Ndukwe Kas-osoka and Chester Reynolds both scored 10 in the win.
Anzar opens Mission Trail Athletic League play at home against Gonzales at 7pm today.
Salinas 70, San Benito 55
Castroville – In a preview of their Tri-County Athletic League opener tonight, the Haybalers fell to the Cowboys in the third-place game of the Condor Christmas Classic at North Monterey County High on Friday.
Todd Janisch was the top scorer for San Benito with 17 points and Kevin Burley had nine points and nine rebounds.
Salinas opened a 37-20 halftime lead before a furious third-quarter rally made the game competitive.
The ‘Balers outscored the Cowboys 26-14 in the period to cut the deficit to five, but a strong fourth quarter by Salinas allowed it to pull away.
Armand McKenzie scored 16 points to lead the Cowboys.
The teams will square off again at 7 tonight in Hollister in the league opener for both teams.
