San Benito overwhelmed by Oak Grove, 71-30
Anzar’s unbeaten run came to an end Friday with a 44-28 loss to Piedmont Hills in the championship game of the San Jose High Academy Invitational.
“They were just really tough defensively,” coach Ed Cecena said. “They’re the toughest team we’ll face all year. It was good experience, hopefully we’ll learn from it.”
The Pirates took a 24-14 halftime lead and were able to control Anzar’s offense throughout the night.
Scott Benson, who made the all-tournament team, led the Hawks (6-1) with 15 points. Adrian Monroy added five points and Erik Olson had four. Steven Mackabee also was an all-tournament selection.
“I’m really proud of the effort,” Cecena said. “I think we opened some eyes.”
Anzar advanced to the title game by beating Evergreen Valley 46-40 late Thursday.
Benson’s four-game streak with 30 or more points was snapped, but he still paced the Hawks with 17 points.
Mackabee added 11 points and James Henrard had nine points.
Oak Grove 71, San Benito 30
San Benito coach John Becerra knew his team would have its work cut out for it facing Oak Grove on the road Friday.
Throw in a first quarter where the Haybalers missed some routine layups and it was never much of a contest as the Eagles routed San Benito.
“A game like this, I was really proud of my guys,” Becerra said. “I thought they battled, they didn’t give in. You improve by playing good competition. You improve by competing.”
Oak Grove took control with a 37-11 advantage in the first half and coasted over the final two quarters.
Kevin Burley paced the ‘Balers with 10 points and Todd Janisch added nine points.
Becerra also credited sophomore Dominic Zanella with a solid game inside on the boards.
“He did a very good job on the boards,” Becerra said. “He’s only a sophomore and he’s been able to grow into the competition he’s facing.”
San Benito returns to action tonight at 7 when it host Watsonville.
