San Juan Bautista – The Anzar boys basketball team starting its Mission Trail Athletic League successfully win a 69-37 route over Gonzales.
After a relatively close first quarter, the Hawks (9-4, 1-0 MTAL) outscored the Spartans 17-9 in the second quarter to take a 33-20 advantage.
“Our press worked well in the first half,” coach Ed Cecena said.
Anzar also finished with a strong 17-6 push in the fourth quarter to blow the game wide open.
Scott Benson paced the effort for the Hawks. The senior forward had a game-high 25 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added two blocks and four assists.
Erik Olson also had a big night inside for Anzar. He poured in 17 points while hauling in nine rebounds and adding two blocks, four assists and a steal.
Cecena was particularly impressed with the point guard play of Adrian Monroy, who had six points and three assists, while committing no turnovers and handling the offense well.
“He set the tempo for us with no turnovers,” Cecena said. “He’s the guy running our offense, he’s handling the ball the most. That’s excellent point guard play for us.”
Steven Mockabee also contributed 11 points for the Hawks.
Anzar continues league action when it travels to face Soledad at 7pm Friday.
