Watsonville – The Anzar Hawks came back to defeat Monte Vista Christian in two of three games on Tuesday night, and ended up sweeping the host Mustangs 25-20, 25-23, 25-23.

It was the first non-tournament match for the Hawks (3-4), who last year qualified for the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs.

Middle blocker Christina Flores supplied Anzar with 10 kills and four blocks, with teammate outside hitter Jaclyn Wiley adding nine kills and two aces. Erin Deleissegues provided an ace, five kills and 31 digs, while setter Kerstin Tuning had 21 assists on her 16th birthday.

“We made a lot of unforced errors, but despite those errors, we were still able to win,” Coach Chris Wardlaw said. “But we haven’t righted the ship yet.”

Although the coach said MVC played well, the Hawks had 12 missed serves in three games. Averaging four a game, Wardlaw said he would like to keep the statistic to under two a game. Said Wardlaw, “That was a problem with us tonight.”

“We weren’t on all cylinders,” he added. “Our offense hasn’t really gelled yet … but they were really supportive of one another and I think we were the better team.”

The Hawks will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday when they host Sobrato at 6pm.

“We played Sobrato last year and beat them in four (games),” Wardlaw said. “But they improved quite a bit last year. I don’t think they lost a lot of players, so they should be pretty tough. We’ll have out work cut out for us, for sure.”
