The Anzar girls basketball team won its second straight game Tuesday, beating Soledad 38-30.

Rachel Baker led the way with 16 points and Jessica Staley added 13 for the Hawks, who are now 2-0 in second round league action.

“I told the girls, ‘It’s a new beginning, let’s take it at that and start over,'” coach Paul Lerma said.

Anzar held a 22-16 lead at halftime before Soledad began pressing and closed the gap a bit.

Shenlyn Bissel, who is among those called up from the junior varsity team, filled in at point guard and overcame some initial shakiness to have a solid outing.

“She did a really good job, keeping things in control,” Lerma said.

The Hawks’ 56-20 win over Gonzales on Friday snapped a six-game losing streak and was powered by strong nights from several players.

Staley had a triple-double with 17 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocks. Baker scored a game-high 18 points and added eight rebounds and Andra Fujita had 13 points, nine steals and seven assists in the rout.

Boys Basketball

The Anzar boys basketball team dropped out of second place in the Mission Trail Athletic League with a 65-58 loss to Soledad on Tuesday.

Anthony Jasso scored a game-high 26 points and Frankie Vasquez hit six 3-pointers on his way to 24 points to help the Aztecs (6-12, 5-3 MTAL) pull off the win.

“We did everything we could to stop ’em,” Anzar coach Ed Cecena said. “They just had an outstanding shooting night.”

Scott Benson had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Hawks (14-7, 6-3) and Stephen Mockabee added 17 points. Erik Olson also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough.

Anzar slipped behind Robert Louis Stevenson (6-2) in the standings with the loss. The Hawks host Greenfield on Thursday at 7pm before traveling to face RLS on Saturday.

“I’m not happy about losing our momentum,” Cecena said. “It was a test that we failed and we need to get back to work and get better in practice and get over it.”

Anzar did get into the win column Friday, opening a big lead and then holding off Gonzales in a 63-59 win.

The Hawks led 25-7 after the first quarter, but were outscored in each of the next three periods.

Anzar held a 49-40 lead entering the fourth quarter. Gonzales outscored the Hawks 19-14 in the final period but Anzar held off the Spartans to earn the win.

Benson and Olson each scored 19 points in the win.
