The Anzar cross country team put an exclamation point on their season Thursday at Toro Park in Salinas, winning the Coast Athletic League title after an undefeated season.

Anzar compiled a meet-low 27 points to claim the CAL crown, and did not even have the top runner.

York’s Daniel Falaleyev finished first overall in 16:58, while the Hawks followed in bunches. Only the first five runners score for each team, and Anzar’s first five runners crossed within the first 10 places.

“We did great,” coach Doug MacKinnon said. “I think the kids really showed tonight.”

Aron Hsia-Coron finished first for Anzar, second overall, after he crossed the finish line in 17:17. Teammate Miles MacKinnon came in third overall in 17:45, and Colin Parsons finished fourth overall in 17:50.

Those three runners for Anzar also earned all-league honors in the CAL.

Other harriers for the Hawks included Israel Parra clocking 18:23 for eighth overall, Alex Sanchez finishing in 18:30 for 10th overall, Christian Heath recording an 18:41 for 16th place, and Adam Wilkinson finishing in 22nd overall after running a 19:22.

“We went undefeated this year,” MacKinnon said. “I was happy it worked out.”

York came in second place at the CAL championships with 39 points and Pacific Collegiate came in third with 62 points.

Anzar will have a week to prepare for the Central Coast Section 2007 Cross Country Championships, which are slated for Crystal Springs in Belmont on Nov. 10.

“We’re going to work out six days a week,” MacKinnon said. “And we’ll taper off at the end for fresh legs.”
