San Juan Bautista – Anzar celebrated its first victory in three years after it knocked off Calvary Chapel 17-6 at home Tuesday.

The Hawks got six strong innings in the circle from Leah Jimenez, who also reached base five times and scored five runs in the win.

“They tasted victory now and they feel good about it,” first-year coach Tina Garza said.

After dropping lopsided decision in its first three games, Anzar finally broke through in their Coastal Athletic League opener.

The Hawks made the switch this season to the CAL after struggling with the tougher competition in the Mission Trail Athletic League.

“History tells me they were in a position last year where they were just getting beat, getting 10-run ruled every game,” Garza said. “(Being in the CAL) is a great opportunity to work with our freshman to develop a program. The girls are responding really well to what we’re telling them.”

Jimenez, who struck out six, is the key leader on the team.

“She’s been doing a great job on the mound,” Garza said. “She’s a hustler out there and a great leader.”

Delaina Greer also had a big day for the Hawks, collecting three hits and scoring four runs.

“She’s done a really good job,” Garza said. “She one of our silent leaders.”

While hitting had been the major problem in the first three games, Garza was happy to see the offense come alive.

“We’ve been working on hitting and it’s starting to come around,” Garza said. “I’ve told the girls I don’t expect to win every game, but I do expect us to hustle and pay attention.”
