San Juan Bautista – The Anzar Hawks entered Thursday’s game against Watsonville on short notice.

Due to a communication error, the Hawks found out on Wednesday that they’d be playing a volleyball match against Watsonville on Thursday.

Nonetheless, the team won in straight games 3-0 in San Juan Bautista Thursday, defeating the visiting Wildcatz 25-15, 25-18, 25-18. Despite the late notice, Coach Chris Wardlaw said it was the best his team has looked in this early season.

“It was a major step forward on the offense,” said Wardlaw, whose Hawks (4-4) had a total of 10 serving aces and eight missed serves. “Anytime you have more aces than missed serves, you’re doing a pretty good job.”

Erin Deleissegues contributed eight kills, four aces and 21 digs on the night, with teammate Christina Flores adding nine kills, two aces and four blocks. Setter Kerstin Tuning supplied 18 assists, four kills and a pair of aces.

The first two games, Wardlaw said, were not all that close, as the Hawks kept a comfortable lead in both matches to take a 2-0 lead.

The third game, though, saw the Hawks mount a comeback, as they outscored the Wildcatz 14-1 to solidify the 3-0 sweep of Watsonville.

Down 16-11 in the third game, the Hawks battled back to tie Watsonville at 17-17. From there, Tuning went to the baseline to serve, and rifled off seven straight service points to take the third game 25-17.

“The third game, they were up on us,” Wardlaw said. “It was neck and neck, and then we blew by them.

“We definitely looked like the better team.”

The Hawks will return to the court on Tuesday when they will host Morgan Hill’s Sobrato at 6pm.
