A 61-year-old Aromas woman died Sunday in a head-on collision involving two pickup trucks northeast of Salinas, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident was reported around 8:40 p.m. in an area on Natividad Road south of Old Stage Road, according to the CHP.

The preliminary investigation revealed that two trucks were involved, a 2004 Toyota and a 1986 Toyota. One of the trucks going southbound crossed over into the opposing lane to pass slower vehicles and it struck the northbound truck, according to the CHP.

Responders pronounced each of the two drivers dead at the scene. One was the Aromas woman, who had been driving the older truck. The other was a 35-year-old Salinas man. The CHP did not specify which truck was southbound or northbound.

Passengers in both vehicles were transported to trauma centers in San Jose with major injuries.

The coroner’s investigation will determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role, according to the CHP.
